Block Any Website

Have you ever dared to checkout what's your child doing on the internet ??
We all know that internet is the useful way to learn , to communicate , to share stuff but you can also recieve some harmful, unpleaseant and bad consequences if your child is misusing it by watching adult content or by spending too much time using social networking websites obviously in result of this misuse he/she will distarct from his/her studies and the real life, which can yield you bad results and can also spoil your child's life .

Just few days ago I was looking for a web extension which can block the sites that I don't want my siblings to access on a computer , because my sibblings are spending more time on the internet and paying less attention to their studies ofcourse the reason is quite obvious and that reason is social networking platforms , they stick their face on a computer screen all the time , eventually I found this very useful website called OpenDNS and I found it very helpful to me , I can block either a single website or the entire category. Lets say you want to block Facebook  now you have two options either you can just block a single domain by entering www.facebook.com in the block list or you can block the whole category of this website i.e. Social networking . Similarly there are enough categories provided to block, like some of them are dating, adult themes, blogs , movies , music , video sharing , nudity etc.

And this website also provides solutions for schools and offices to control the web content. I'll instruct you to setup an home account on OpenDNS.
Lets see how does it work , first of all you have to do is signup for a new OpenDNS  Home account , when you open the site you will see two options "For business" and "For home" , as we're going to setup a home account so click on "For Home" option.

When you click , it will take you to the page where you will see two get started options under "Premium DNS" and "Parental Controls" , click on the second one which is under "Parental Controls"

Now three more options will appear in a new page (:P) , click on the first one which is "OpenDNS Home" under this heading you can see "Sign up now" option click on it and fill out your information then continue to the next step.

Now it will ask you to change DNS settings and will provide three options i would recommend that attempt the first option which is "Computer" , after choosing that option you will have to make some changes on your computer , and it will show you the instructions after you select your operating system and then follow the instructions that will be shown on your screen , for example i have Windows xp operating system so i click on that XP link and then instantly it will show me the instructions , after following those instructions and making those changes on your computer click on  "NEXT: Test your new settings →"

You might see this following page saying "Oops, you're not using DNS yet"

But don't worry this message appears because it might take few moments for new settings to take place , if this message appears to you then go back to the previous page and just wait for few moments and then re-click on "NEXT: Test your new settings →" this time you must get success & if you don't then wait for few moments more, and then after waiting for some time repeat the same process.
After you get the success you will see the following message

Now click on the "home" link , you will see this page

Then click on the settings tab

Now you have to add a network , it will automatically fill your IP address and if it doesn't then you can see your IP address at the top of the page you can copy it from there in the box.

Now click on "add this network button" it will ask you to give this network a name , its upto you whatever you want to name it . Your network is all set , click on this network and it will take you to the "web content filtering" settings. Here you can see two main headings , the first one is "Choose your filtering level" which has five options or levels of filtering ,  you can see the categories that these levels are holding by clicking on a "view" option under these levels , the "custom" option allows you to block categories of your own choice. The second heading is "Manage individual domains" here you can add any specific website/domain name that you want to block.
Everytime you block any category or any idividual domain it will take approxiamately 3 to 5 minutest for changes to take place . :-)

See here i blocked "social networking" category , now it will take 3 minutes for changes to take place , and after  three minutes when you open any website that holds this category it will not open , see if i open www.facebook.com (which lies under the social networking category) and this page will appear

You can log into your account any time and can manage the websites that you want or do not want to open on your home computer , so far i've found this one is the easiest and the safest way to block web content on your computer . I hope you found it useful too and will make the most of it :-)
